Georgia Power

We were engaged by Georgia Power to conduct Executive Community Assessments in six Georgia communities identified as having potential for increased economic development activity: Macon, Athens, Columbus, Americus, Rome, and Tifton. In each case, community leadership identified target industries (one primary, one secondary) on which they believed were most appropriate to focus their business attraction efforts.

Business Issue

Prior to visiting each community, we conducted background research and evaluated past site location projects to identify recent location trends and critical location factors within the target industries. Our team then spent two days in each community interviewing local leadership, employers, educational institutions, planning & zoning officials, and other stakeholders in the economic development process. Our team subsequently returned to deliver an interactive presentation to community leadership that included site selection trends in the target industries, our assessment of community strengths and weaknesses relative to the target industries, recommendations for marketing to corporations and location consultants, and additional suggestions for business attraction efforts. The goal of the assessments was to provide leadership with candid feedback on how outsiders such as site location consultants (and our corporate clients) view their community as a business location.

By all accounts, our analysis and approach was well received in each community. Only months after our session in Rome, the community announced that Beocarta, a Glasgow, UK based bioscience company planned to establish their world headquarters in Rome. The community credited us for providing insight and focus, which they say enable them to better compete for this global bioscience project.
